The Archives Department at St Vincent’s Hospital holds the records of the association, which was formed in 1933, with the name of the St Vincent’s Hospital Medical Graduates Association. The first President of the Association was Mr Leo Doyle. These records show that in 1935 60 members attended the annual dinner (held at a city hotel immediately after the Annual General Meeting). Shortly thereafter the annual dinner was held in conjunction with a golf day. In 1938 the dinner was held at the Peninsula Golf Club and in 1939 at the Victoria Golf Club. In 1940 the Association voted to donate an annual prize to the top final year student at St Vincent’s.
Over the years the Association has organised a number of social and educational activities for the members.  At various times, these have included an annual dinner, a dinner dance, a tennis day, a cocktail party and historical talk, and the long standing annual golf day.  One of the Association’s most memorable events was the 1993 dinner to celebrate the centenary of St Vincent’s Hospital. Jointly organised with the Senior Medical Staff Association, the dinner attracted nearly 700 guests. From around 1969, the association supported and gave money to the organisation for a 'graduate education week' at the hospital (with an international speaker).
In 2010, the St Vincent’s Clinical School celebrated its centenary. To mark this event, the Association commissioned artist Julia Ciccarone to create the painting shown above. More recently the painting was loaned to the Medical History Museum at the University of Melbourne as part of the Medical School’s celebration of its 150 years of existence.
